Crave
Description
Crave, the debut album from French musician and songwriter Léonie Pernet, is set for release on InFiné on September 21st.
Written and recorded in Paris Crave’s eleven tracks showcase Pernet’s talent for teaming hypnotic melodies and sometimes challenging sonics – the result an impressive and diverse body of work.
Lead track African Melancholia is premiered online today with a hard-hitting video addressing the refugee situation in the French capital. Shot in the North Of Paris - a frequent destination for migrants looking for shelter - the video clip features Sudanese actor Mohammed Mostafa, himself a refugee. Having fled the massacres in Dafur in the Sudan and endured a traumatic journey to reach France his fight for asylum continues backed by the support of video director Adrien Landre and his production team.
A criminalist by training, director Adrien Landre joined forces with Julien Soulier between them producing videos clips for Major Lazer and Rone. African Melancholia has already picked up high profile posts from Liberation and i-D in France.
Pianist, arranger, singer and drummer (as discovered in Yuksek’s band) Pernet released her first EP on Kill The DJ setting the template for Crave and her flair for cinematographic compositions. Embracing influences ranging from Klaus Nomi, Jeanne Moreau and Caribou, Pernet’s taps into the poetry of Francois de Malherbe providing the lyrics to Rose and discusses the anxiety of being in Arabic on the sublime Auaati.
After a stormy schooling Pernet studied the sacred art of liturgical music at university while organising her first club nights, a combination which inspired an active political conscience and poetry via mixes – Mix pour tous, Mix debout and Mix d’entre deux tours which are daily mixes of electro scratching, precisely aimed rants and mystical wells of light – similar to the record she’s given birth to.
A record of restlessness, born out of solitude and showcasing Pernet’s adventurous spirit Crave is, as the title suggests, of oppressive desire, a clawing at the shadows and shafts of light and as spacious as a place of worship. Amen to that.......
