Description
In the early 1970s, Brazilian popular music was reaching new heights of creativity and popularity. Artists such as Elis Regina, Chico Buarque, and Milton Nascimento offered high-quality Brazilian pop, while tropicalists Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, and Os Mutantes (see World Psychedelic Classics 1) entertained students with avant-garde fuzz-pop poetry. That's when Tim Maia entered the scene. Standing just 5'7‘ (5'11’ with his afro), Tim Maia was larger than life and completely out of control. He was the personification of rock star excess, having been married five times, fathered at least six children, served multiple prison sentences, consumed copious amounts of drugs, and joined a religious cult obsessed with UFOs.
