Description
Little Amélie or the Character of Rain
Original Score by Mari Fukuhara
Digital Release – June 25 on all streaming platforms
The debut feature from Maïlys Vallade and Liane-Cho Han, Little Amélie or The Character of Rain—adapted from the best-seller novel by Amélie Nothomb—introduces a musical voice as tender as it is evocative.
Tokyo-based composer Mari Fukuhara delivers an original score that delicately bridges childhood wonder with existential depth. Her music flows with curiosity, shifting from playfulness to introspection in a way that feels both deeply personal and universally resonant.
“A soul endowed with almighty power, yet still adrift in a dream. The image of a young girl holding fast to a sense of justice incomprehensible to adults deeply echoed my own childhood self... Amelie’s emotions came through with such clarity, they naturally transformed into music.”
— Mari Fukuhara
With impressionistic piano lines, rich orchestral textures, and delicate threads of traditional Japanese instrumentation (shakuhachi, koto), Fukuhara’s score captures the world as filtered through a child’s gaze—lyrical, unpredictable, and quietly enchanted. The marimba and snippets of Japanese folk melody lend the score a tactile innocence, enriching its tonal landscape with a sense of childlike wonder.
“What’s remarkable is how Mari embraced every challenge we presented—often stepping far outside her usual terrain—while shaping a sonic world entirely in tune with her own sensibility.”
— Maïlys Vallade, Co-Director
Each musical theme is carefully woven into the film’s arc. One standout, “The Garden” (“Le Jardin”, in French), composed during the pilot phase, captures the sheer joy and power a child feels when convinced she can command the natural world. As the narrative unfolds, the music becomes more shadowed—never forced, always attuned.
“I believe I was able to express Amélie’s most joyful moment, when she still completely believes in her omnipotence and handles the flowers and nature as she wishes. As the story progresses, the music takes on more shadows.”
— Mari Fukuhara
The score was recorded in Tokyo with an orchestra, with Fukuhara herself on piano. The result is a breathing soundtrack—contemplative, expressive, and deeply balanced to the rhythm of the story.
“Despite the language barrier, it became obvious she had found a musical language in perfect sync with the film we were trying to make.”
— Liane-Cho Han, Co-Director
Recorded in Tokyo with orchestra and performed on piano by the composer herself, the score unfolds as a living, contemplative work — never merely illustrative, but always in conversation with the film’s emotional current.
