Logg - 2026 Repress
Description
Leroy Burgess, the undisputed godfather of boogie, delivers an absolute masterpiece with his project Logg.
The self-titled album, originally released on Salsoul in August 1981, is a must-have from the post-disco era. A favorite of Be With Records, it's a true honor for us to reissue it. It contains all the ingredients that make Burgess so successful: infectious rhythms, soaring synths, an irresistible funk bassline, and optimistic lyrics, all carried by gospel-tinged vocal harmonies. An album that uplifts both body and soul.
Already a cult figure in soul music as the lead singer of the iconic vocal group Black Ivory, Leroy Burgess honed his skills as an arranger, singer, and songwriter alongside the legendary producer Patrick Adams on essential late-70s projects such as Phreek and Dazzle. He then defined the essence of "boogie": that vibrant, underground dance sound that contrasted sharply with commercial disco. With its slower tempo (between 90 and 110 BPM), Burgess's cool boogie possesses the dynamism of disco, but in a more laid-back style.
Each of the six tracks could have been a 12-inch hit on its own. In fact, some of them were. But together, they form an incredibly cohesive album, where all the compositions blend seamlessly. In short, it's a must-have; an exceptional showcase of Burgess's talent for arrangement and production, featuring an intensely euphoric vocal performance, supported by the inventive rhythm section of Aaron (Sonny) T. Davenport on drums and James Calloway on bass.
The opening track, "(You've Got) That Something," is a sunny and catchy tune with an irresistible chorus, while the timeless vocals of "Dancing Into The Stars," coupled with punchy synths and impeccable drumming, illustrate the rapport between Burgess and the rhythm section.
The fusion of funk and gospel harmonies that propels "Something Else" is remarkable: deep, joyful, and dynamic. Brilliantly mixed by Larry Levan, "I Know You Will" flows effortlessly, with perfect fluidity. A driving electric piano, underpinned by a precise and irresistibly positive groove, completes the package. "Lay It On The Line" radiates a subtle and smooth brilliance, enhanced by interstellar synth pads. Finally, the closing track, "Sweet To Me," is a gem of sweetness and deep soul elegance.
Logg has long been a hit with artists like Kenny Dope and Dam-Funk, while in the last decade, MCDE and Harvey Sutherland have regularly cited it as a major influence. As a result, finding original vinyl copies at an affordable price has been a challenge. This new reissue from Be With guarantees that this legendary record will have the sound, aesthetics, and feel it deserves.
Masterfully mastered by Simon Francis, cut by Pete Norman, and featuring a meticulously reproduced cover, this reissue does full justice to this classic.
