Description
Brought together by Antoine Rajon through their shared love of modal and “free” jazz, the four musicians of KOMA embraced the no-safety-net experience of “Jazz On The Moment,” a hallmark of the KOMOS label’s Analog Home Session series. These friends—both on stage and in life—already play together in other groups, such as AMG for Keïta Janota and Anthony Jouravsky, and OLA TUNJI for Ornella Noulet and Anthony.
For this recording, the new group set up in the living room of a house in Burgundy, which sound engineer Christian Hierro had equipped for the occasion with the finest vintage analog gear.
With no preparation other than the few hours leading up to the start of the tape recorder, KOMA recorded the tracks in the order they appear on the album. Two pure improvisations are interspersed with a composition (in two versions) by Keïta Janota and a composition by vibraphonist Martin Blouet, who was making his professional recording debut.
The cult track ‘John Coltrane’, composed by double bassist Bill Lee, Spike Lee’s father, is the only cover version on the album. The quartet offers a surprising, almost ‘ambient’ rendition, without the heavy rhythm section and epic solos found on other recordings. The musicians’ love for the music of the ‘saxophonist supreme’ is no less intense for it.
A birth certificate marking the very day the group was formed, this ‘unadulterated’ album will, we hope, enable this unusual line-up (two saxophonists, a vibraphonist and a double bassist) to present its lyrical and meditative music on numerous stages.
