Curio Curio
Description
Curió Curió was born from a happy coincidence. Two artists — Luiza Monteiro, a singer and actress born in Rio and now based in Austria, and German producer Dustin Braun — each found themselves at a turning point in their journey. A chance encounter quickly gave rise to an exhilarating and heartfelt Brazilian MPB project, infused with psychedelic disco influences and studio experimentation.
In their own words, Curió Curió’s sonic vision “is neither pure disco, nor pure samba, nor strictly old-school, but draws from all of these genres to create something both contemporary and nostalgic.” A modern fusion inspired as much by Gal Costa and Jorge Ben Jor as by Say She She and Bala Desejo, their sound confidently carves out its own path — a celebration of freedom, movement, love, and life, punctuated by moments of introspection.
Seeing tradition as a living, shifting, constantly evolving force, the album is driven not only by a shared love of Brazilian music, but by a deeper question running through every track: where do you belong when home becomes plural?
A Brazilian living in Europe, Luiza explores themes of identity, culture, and existence through her lyrics. Her songs move between cities and emotional states without ever settling, tracing an identity in perpetual transformation.
Tracks such as “Amor Doente” and “Mar sem Dar Pé” revolve around ambiguous relationships, while “Menina Passarinho” reflects both the fear and necessity of fully committing to music. For Luiza, deepening her musical path alongside years of theatre work felt both inevitable and difficult.
Braun’s production follows a similar philosophy. Initial ideas were often built without obvious reference points, later incorporating rhythmic and vocal elements that evoke Brazil without imitating it. Analog techniques, tape machines, ribbon microphones, and live ensemble recording bring a tactile quality that reflects the duo’s fascination with process as much as outcome. Standout tracks include “Bem Querer,” steeped in the spirit of authentic street samba with an irresistibly catchy chorus, and “Vem pra Casa,” a cosmic-leaning slice of Brazilian boogie.
The album closes with “A Cor do Meu Sonho,” a quiet act of perseverance — a refusal to be intimidated by the unknown, and a belief in the strength of difference. More than a conclusion, it feels like a continuation, leaving the album’s central question unresolved. “I started to understand that I could belong to several places at once,” Luiza explains. “And that’s something to embrace.” The lyrics of the song “Raiz” translate to: “I appreciate the burning sun and the freshness of the air. Constant change is my companion.” With Curió Curió, that idea comes alive through sound, storytelling, and collaboration — a debut album both introspective and assured, rooted in cultural heritage yet shaped by distance.
