Description
A leading figure in the British music scene, Murkage Dave has spent the last decade crafting a body of work that defies categorization. His music, with its pop sensibilities but influenced by indie, outsider art, and an innate sense of storytelling, is grounded in honesty, empathy, and uncompromising social commentary. His debut album, Murkage Dave Changed My Life (2018), has amassed over 12 million streams on Spotify, while its successor, The City Needs A Hero (2022), reached number 10 on the UK iTunes chart and number 15 on the UK Independent Artists chart. With his upcoming album, Brut Thoughts, Dave explores the inner turmoil of modern life and the fractured world around him, questioning internet culture, overstimulation, the immigrant experience, political extremism, and the power of community. The album channels current anger and disillusionment, while refusing to lose hope. "It's the music of millennial meme culture," he explains. "The cacophony of my thoughts pours out into songs. Living in the shadow of the Thatcherite and Reaganite economic policies of the 80s, the broken social contract, the unfulfilled promise of a better life if everyone did their part."
A true cathartic soundtrack to life in late capitalism, the album draws inspiration from Talking Heads , Sampha , The Smiths , and The Streets . Collaboration is at the heart of the album's DNA, with contributions from James (Yard Act) , Kayus (Young Fathers) , Ellery (WU LYF) , and Lauren Auder . The 2024 tour with Yard Act was also a creative catalyst, as was his touring collective, which he co-founded with Mike Skinner.
