Description

Chroniques terrestres Vol. 2 was conceived by Voyou (Thibaud Vanhooland) as a playground between two albums. Chroniques terrestres Vol. 1, released in 2021, followed the same principle: an instrumental album of experimentation and freedom, both vibrant and introspective.

After his EP Seul (Alone) and his collaboration with Vanessa Paradis, and the covers album Henri Salvador est un voyou released last year, Voyou designed these chronicles to explore music in all directions. Electronic music meets samba, pop, and Afrobeat; samples and brass intertwine; vocals and synthesizer textures blend together.

As an impressive multi-instrumentalist, Voyou is at the helm alone.

As with each new album, he enjoys experimenting with a new instrument: here, the tenor saxophone, and he plays all the other instruments on the EP.

This eight-track instrumental album was created over nine months, just after the composer had a child.

In this new daily life, he steals moments of solitude in the studio he built at home. Using instrumental loops composed on his computer, he experiments with arrangements, textures, and rhythms. And when he's not composing, Voyou digs for sounds, hunts for rare records, and discovers new musical curiosities.

In this vibrant and multifaceted EP, then, there are no limits or predetermined directions.

It's about seeing where the music leads, letting the moment unfold. The moment also encompasses encounters, both improbable and inevitable, that Voyou invites into his music.

One such encounter is with the Belgian-Cameroonian composer and performer Lubiana, who composes on the kora and lends her smooth voice to "Yemaya." Another encounter is with the rapper Tuerie, an unclassifiable artist who sings as much as he raps, and whom we hear on the mischievous track "Hula Hoop," a song that oscillates between intimate, confessional moments and soaring orchestral passages where everything soars and rejoices.

These Chroniques terrestres sometimes console and radiate (Adieu l'été, Dimanche, La vie la nuit) and sometimes instill a fighting spirit (Chronique terrestre, En ville).

Voyou has imagined a changing, migratory music that also stirs to ward off our sense of powerlessness in the face of deadly news.
For although these instrumental Chronicles were conceived as the musician became a father, that is not what they are about. In fact, they speak of everything else: they speak of the world around us, which trembles, which sometimes stuns, which worries us.
Above all, they speak, despite everything, of the light that persists.
