Description
A new, previously unreleased limited edition double vinyl and cassette compilation of recordings from Deben Bhattacharya's travels in Southeast Asia in the early 1970s. This time, the focus is on traditional and religious music from Thailand. As in most Asian countries, Thai music is characterized by two distinct elements: folk songs and dances rooted in village traditions, and the complexly structured Piphat orchestra, arguably designed and performed for the elite. Village music is primarily melodic, with songs and dances accompanied by wind and string instruments. The Piphat orchestra, on the other hand, utilizes a rich collection of percussion instruments. The record opens with the Piphat orchestra performing the Ramakien, an epic that recounts the political and cultural history of Thailand from ancient times.
