Description
The Sorcerers’ latest album arrives just in time for summer, marking a new chapter in their distinctive approach to Ethiopian-inspired jazz. Other Worlds and Habitats benefits from the analog recording and meticulous production expected from this renowned studio. This highly anticipated fourth album follows the success of I Too Am A Stranger, a record praised by BBC Radio 2’s Jamie Cullum (“I love it, it’s really good”), by Ethiopian jazz legend Mulatu Astatke (“I like the grooves, and it’s nice to see The Sorcerers interpreting Ethiopian grooves and jazz in their own way”), and by Nightmares on Wax (“It sounds great. I love the way it’s recorded”).
Tireless and always mindful to avoid mere imitation, The Sorcerers view Ethiopian sounds not as a novelty but as a foundational element of their natural evolution as a band, part of a much broader and ever-expanding sonic structure. The arrival of keyboardist Johnny Richards, whose use of the Jen 73 piano, Mellotron and Farfisa organ alongside the group’s founding members, has opened promising new directions for The Sorcerers. Their music blends the future-facing optimism of the 1960s and 70s, a time when artists were exploring new electronic technologies and the rise of affordable synthesizers, with more traditional textures.
Inspired by Ethiopian keyboardist Hailu Mergia and Nigerian visionary William Onyeabor, Other Worlds and Habitats, true to its name, showcases The Sorcerers’ evolution toward a bold and deeply engaging new musical landscape.
