I Too Am A Stranger
Description
Recorded entirely at ATA Studios and produced by label head Neil Innes, I Too Am A Stranger features the Sorcerers trio (led by Neil Innes) of Joost Hendrickx/Neil Innes/Richard Ormrod, with contributions from regular percussion collaborator Danny Templeman and Olivia Cuthill. I Too Am A Stranger takes a decidedly maximalist approach—a layered recording, both sonically and in its interwoven influences. As always, the Ethiopian sound is front and center (Bebaynetu, Kid Mahout, She Who Perceives The Sounds Of The World), but there are also nods to the declamatory chanbara soundtracks through Fumio Hayasaka’s baritone saxophone, the hazy vibes of Gary Burton’s Vibrafinger era, and the explosive wooden blocks of Moondog.
In truth, there is so much in this album to appeal to such a wide range of listeners: rhythms, exotic melodies, distant horns, inward and outward references to the worlds of jazz, library music, Ethio, and more—all tied together by ATA’s fully analog sound, satisfying both DJs and audiophiles alike.
