Description

The Begena is one of the rare musical instruments in the world to have survived for more than 5,800 years.
What makes it fascinating is not only its age but also the fact that its construction and use have remained unchanged throughout the centuries. It is still made from wood and animal materials — sheep gut for the strings and leather covering the resonator. The instrument continues to be used for prayer, praising God, and meditation, just as it was in ancient times — and it has endured to this day.

During the Derg regime, after the overthrow of Emperor Haile Selassie, the Begena lost its cultural importance. It had once been played on the radio during fasting periods, but all of that came to an end.

For a time, it became a disappearing popular instrument. But that is no longer the case — especially over the past fifteen or sixteen years, it has experienced a remarkable revival. Today, there are many Begena players, mostly young people, and a number of luthiers still craft the instrument for new students.

What is truly special about the Begena is its sound — it possesses a unique power to draw listeners into silence, focus, and contemplation. It encourages reflection and inner stillness. One doesn’t have to be Ethiopian to appreciate it; anyone who hears it will instinctively grow quiet and attentive.
