Description
On “Malcolm,” a track from his latest album, Glory Of The King’s Hand, Chuck Strangers raps, “I always rap from the perspective of my real name…” His stage name, “Chuck Strangers,” is of course a pseudonym, but not necessarily an alter ego. For the man born Che Jessamy, his stage name isn’t an extravagant rock star persona, created from scratch for the public; it’s simply a name. What you hear on his records is truly who he is: a sharp-tongued storyteller from East Flatbush, Brooklyn, with a gift for spontaneous and impactful narrative. His lyrics are imbued with the wisdom he's gained throughout his life, particularly during the fourteen years since his beginnings with the Pro Era collective in the 2010s.
“When I was younger, I was always thinking about next year or saying things like, ‘When I do this, it’ll turn out like that…’ blah blah blah,” Chuck explains, describing the evolution of his definition of success. “But with age, I’ve simply become aware of how lucky I am to be able to make music [professionally].” The carefully chosen title of his new album, Glory Of The King’s Hand, reflects his gratitude for the opportunities life has given him. At 34, he lives his passion and does it his way. Something to be grateful for.
Glory Of The King’s Hand reflects not only Chuck’s maturity, but also the maturity of his music. After ten years in the business, he's placing unprecedented emphasis on songwriting: "On this album, I made some very deliberate musical choices," he explains. "I wrote choruses, melodies, arrangements… I really tried to create better songs, tracks that people would want to listen to again and again, that are more than just a good verse." Collaboration was essential to this refined approach. Chuck is a talented beatmaker, as evidenced by his productions for himself and artists such as Joey Badass and Boldy James (see the 2025 album "Token of Appreciation"). But this time, Chuck chose to be a producer in the Quincy Jones sense, bringing together singers, producers, and musicians instead of handling all the beats and rhymes himself: "I only wrote one beat on the album ["Everyday"], which is the fewest beats I've ever made on any of my albums." The result of this collaborative approach is astounding. Take, for example, "Breaking Atoms," a track built upon the improvised music of the trio/group Human Error Club. A hypnotic Fender Rhodes and driving drums perfectly complement Chuck and Woods' visual verses, giving way to Zeroh's psychedelic vocals and his exclamation, "We the main soooource!" Obii Say, the multi-talented newcomer—Chuck's current favorite rapper—appears on two tracks ("Everyday" and "Miracle Miles") and produces a third.
The list of producers who contributed to the album reads like a who's who of underground sonic explorers, including The Alchemist, Animoss, Theravada, Kenny Segal, Preservation, Child Actor, and Morriarchi.
And while …King’s Hand offers, in a way, a glimpse of what this underground scene might look like in 2026, Chuck's touch is unique, distinctly Chuck Strangers. “I had to forge my own path!” His determination stems in part from the influence of his legendary mentors, like the late Ka and The Alchemist, who each developed their own style. “There are tons of Roc Marcis, tons of Earl Sweatshirts, and tons of Alchemists, but I have to do my own thing, even if it might look a little different from what others are doing… I can only be myself.”
