Faust - Limited
Description
Few debut albums possess an autonomous logic and a radical spirit like Faust’s self-titled record. Released in 1971, it marked the beginning of a project that would defy genres and expectations, offering a fragmented and exploratory approach to rock, blending tape experiments, improvised structures, and surreal collages.
This reissue on Bureau B provides a new opportunity to dive into one of the most curious and uncompromising albums of its era. The story of Faust begins in 1969, when cultural journalist Uwe Nettelbeck met Horst Schmolzi, artistic director at Polydor in Hamburg. Schmolzi was looking for a German answer to the Beatles, but Nettelbeck had other ideas. Armed with a generous advance, he set out to create a far more radical project.
Nettelbeck ventured into Hamburg’s underground scene and merged members of the bands Nukleus and Campylognatus Citelli to form a new group of six musicians. From Nukleus came bassist Jean-Hervé Péron, guitarist Rudolf Sosna, and saxophonist Gunther Wüsthoff. From Campylognatus Citelli, he recruited keyboardist Hans-Joachim Irmler and drummers Werner “Zappi” Diermaier and Arnulf Meifert.
