Chaupard & Chopin - Limited
Description
Chaupard & Chopin is the meeting of two stage animals: Di-Meh, an independent Swiss rapper with raw energy, and Chilly Gonzales, a virtuoso musician, performer and rapper in his spare time.
Chilly Gonzales, a pianist, composer and entertainer internationally renowned both for his Solo Piano album trilogy and for his collaborations with Daft Punk, Feist and Drake, has established himself as a unique figure, blending humour, virtuosity and daring on stage. In recent years, he has continued to explore rap and contemporary music, notably through his acclaimed session for Grünt, his Rap de Chambre project – a concert created for Radio France’s Hyper Weekend Festival 2025, where he brought together a new generation of artists with chamber musicians (which notably made Theodora’s hit “Ils me rient tous au nez” by Theodora), and his numerous recent collaborations as a pianist and quasi-producer alongside rappers such as Souffrance, Zinée and Georgio.
Alongside him, Di-Meh has established himself as a leading figure on the brilliant Swiss rap scene, alongside artists such as Makala, Slimka and Mairo. An artist with a rare stage presence, he is renowned for his boundless energy, his freedom and his ability to get any audience he performs for absolutely buzzing. A long-time fan of Di-Meh, Chilly Gonzales invited him to join him on stage during a concert in Geneva for an improvised track. The chemistry was instant. The two artists decided to extend the experience into the studio, giving rise to a first track, then a joint five-track EP where the piano engages in dialogue with the most accomplished flows of contemporary rap, balancing mastery of the fundamentals with the exploration of new territories.
Far from a simple piano-and-vocals project, this is a true collaboration: Gonzo isn’t just behind his piano; he also steps in as an MC, entertainer and driving force on stage. The piano becomes rhythmic, hypnotic, sometimes unexpected, whilst the two artists play with the conventions of rap and live performance. Combining raw energy, dreamy moments and touches of whimsy, Chaupard & Chopin offers a unique experience.
The name of the project itself embodies this encounter: Chaupard is an affectionate nickname given to Di-Meh by his mother, who had renamed him “Paco Chaupard”, a tender twist on the name 2Pac Shakur. The reference to Chopin, one of the greatest composers of the Romantic period, stands out as a major source of inspiration for Chilly Gonzales, whose spirit he carries forward as a true modern-day Chopin.
The project brings together two artists who engage in a dialogue, responding to and challenging one another to create a free and unpredictable musical universe, still unseen in the French-speaking rap scene. The EP also features strong collaborations, with Jungle Jack as a guest artist and JeanJass on production for the track “Pacino Pacino”, further enhancing the project’s scope.
The cover art, created by artist Dexter Maurer, extends this universe with a surrealist aesthetic: two giant gummy bears sit enthroned amidst mountainous landscapes reminiscent of Switzerland, like a quirky nod to the project’s identity and the unlikely meeting of these two worlds.
