Description
Art Blakey had become the new hero of the Paris jazz scene, following his concert at the Olympia on November 22, 1958, and his subsequent performances at the Club Saint-Germain. Audiences were captivated by tracks like Blues March and Moanin’. So why not entrust him with the soundtrack of the film that Édouard Molinaro had just completed?
The only issue, though a major one, was time. There was simply no room for an original score. Instead, the Jazz Messengers would have to spread the word through other means. Fortunately, the group’s tenor saxophonist and arranger, Benny Golson, had become an expert in the art of creating something new from existing material, and he handled the task with both skill and intelligence.
With the exception of three original compositions, the film’s musical sequences are in fact drawn from the Messengers’ repertoire, but in adapted versions. For instance, Whisper Not reappears under the title Ne Chuchote Pas. It was an extremely risky process… but the result proved remarkable.
