Bachar Mar-Khalifé Joue Christophe
From the very first notes, something becomes strikingly obvious: a natural beauty flows from melodies restored to their fragile, stripped-down essence. Bachar Mar-Khalifé explores the hypnotic melancholy of a world that is at once sophisticated and crystal-clear. It is a fascinating dive "into this luxury that is collapsing," as the lyrics to *Les Paradis perdus* put it.
Seven tracks featuring his musical partners Dogan Poyraz on drums and Aleksander Angelov on bass—seven narratives that showcase the musical richness of Christophe’s songs as well as the depth of Bachar Mar-Khalifé’s own playing and vocals.
It is a captivating journey, whether on record or on stage. That is, in fact, where it all began. In April 2025, Bachar took the bold step of presenting a tribute at the *Fragile* festival at the Cirque Zingaro, five years after Christophe’s death. At first glance, this might not seem like his usual territory. "I didn’t idolize him my whole life," he explains. "I actually got to know Christophe personally before I knew his body of work in detail."
Consequently, there was no question of overproducing these covers—a common pitfall when tackling an intimidating body of work. "I tried to move very quickly to deliver each song, as if I had composed it myself." It was an instinctive, highly spontaneous process, with the bulk of the album stemming from the trio’s rehearsals and the subsequent concerts. "I chose songs that resonated with me. Beautiful melodies and beautiful lyrics." Whether the words were penned by Jean-Michel Jarre or Alain Kan, "they speak volumes about love in peril. I love the idea of sharing that line from Les Paradis perdus : 'Dandy, a bit cursed, a bit aged / In this luxury that is collapsing.'" »
Embracing fragility with a rush of emotion, and lightness of touch with unfathomable depths, Bachar Mar-Khalifé reveals an unexpected spiritual kinship with Christophe. It is a bond forged in shared silences and sonic surprises—such as the synthesized *zurna* sound in "Emporte-moi"—that will extend into a tour. He is also preparing an album of original songs—his first since 2020—following a period dedicated largely to film scores and collaborations with other artists. He writes songs of love and dance, even as Lebanon and the world endure such dark times. Perhaps this, too, is a lesson learned from Christophe: to love and sing "amidst this collapsing luxury. »
