Description
The first singles later classified as punk appeared in 1976. A thoroughly appropriate fiftieth anniversary, which Tapete Records is celebrating with a compilation, while Ventil Verlag is commemorating the event with two books.
"Punks are today's old farts," Vomit Visions noted as early as 1980. And doesn't that encapsulate the very essence of punk: the historicization of the genre, its musical conservatism, and the hype surrounding significant anniversaries? Does punk still have something to say in our time? And German-speaking punk in particular – Deutschpunk, that famous German way?
Whatever answer anyone may give to these questions, punk in Germany has simply endured for five decades, despite all the criticisms about "old farts." Even in 2026, punk bands continue to form in Winnenden, Limburg, and Hoyerswerda, just as they did in 1978, 1983, and 2013. And like this musical journey through time, they care little for rigid definitions of "Deutschpunk." This compilation rather embraces different styles and voices of punk with German lyrics. What unites these tracks is their grounding in punk and in the German language, while creating a work that is uniquely their own. In their most striking moments, they struggle as much with the German language as they do with punk itself.
Like any good mixtape, this compilation prioritizes musical quality and disregards the year of release.
Ventil Verlag is celebrating fifty years of punk with a double publication where over 200 authors present what they consider to be the most important song in punk history:
Bored Teenagers: A Punk Mixtape and Attack on the Land of Milk and Honey: A Deutschpunk Mixtape, both edited by Jonas Engelmann. More than 200 musicians, fanzine editors, authors, and journalists – punks, ex-punks, and anti-punks – look back on fifty years of German-speaking punk and search for their favorite song: "Which song introduced me to punk, and which one best embodies the spirit of punk in my eyes?"
The only common thread among these more than 200 responses: even after half a century, punk remains much more than just another musical genre for these authors.
