TNT est le troisième album de Tortoise. Il a été écrit et enregistré pendant un intervalle de 10 mois en 1997. Ce calendrier d'écriture et de production plus long qu'à l'accoutumée a été délibérément entrepris par le groupe dans l'espoir de créer un album expansif, diversifié et cohérent sur le plan thématique. TNT s'appuie sur le cadre instrumental dépouillé du premier album éponyme du groupe, ainsi que sur les aventures mélodiques de l'album complet suivant, Millions Now Living Will Never Die.
