Le son Suedehead du début des années 70 s'inscrivait dans la lignée du style skinhead des années 1968-70. La différence notable était visible et audible : les rythmes vifs et saccadés s'apaisaient pour donner naissance à ce que l'on appellera bientôt le so reggae des débuts.
Le style plus dur et plus brutal du style Rude Boy/Skinhead s'assouplissait légèrement, presque au rythme moins frénétique, pour un groove plus lent. Le style s'allongeait un peu, passant d'un Mark 1 à un Feather Cut. Les paroles, inspirées de « Rude Boy Out of Jail », devenaient plus consciencieuses, marquant un nouveau tournant dans l'évolution constante de la musique Jamaïcaine.
