Yerevan Nights
Description
The sixteen tracks on this compilation were recorded during major generational shifts at both ends of the Asian continent: the bubble economy boom in Japan and the gradual collapse of the Soviet Union, historically beginning in 1985 and reaching a paradigmatic peak in 1990. One can observe the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic, where this sociopolitical dichotomy is even more pronounced. Developing this chronology in its entirety would require several volumes; the aim of this compilation is rather to pose a fundamental question: how could these societies produce such an identical sonic result from diametrically opposed socioeconomic spheres—why do these cataloged Soviet Armenian recordings sound so remarkably like Japanese city pop of the same era?
