Description
The Şatellites’ sound shimmers between traditional Turkish folk and instrumentation, ethereal psychedelic guitar leads, and groovy dance-floor basslines. This unique blend draws on cross-continental influences while illuminating the vivid essence of classic Turkish music, paying homage to the Anatolian folk and psych artists from this golden era. From the funky disco beat of Disko Arabesque to the celestial lead guitar in Yağmur Yağar Taş Üstüne, the band infuses timeless Turkish music with new energy and meaning.
The album covers essential tracks such as Olurmu Dersin by female singer Kamuran Akkor and Yekte by musician and guitarist Zafer Dilek, embracing a variety of original pieces, musical styles, and sounds that have emerged from Turkey and continue to evolve.
The band consists of six members: Ariel Harrosh (Bass), Lotan Yaish (Drums), Yuli Shafriri (Vocals), Tsuf Mishali (Keys and Synths), Tal Eyal (Percussion), and Itamar Kluger (Diwan saz – both electric and acoustic –, electric bağlama, and Greek 4-double-string bouzouki). They came together years after band leader Itamar Kluger discovered the saz while traveling in the Kaçkar Mountains in eastern Turkey. The saz, a long-necked plucked string instrument rooted in the country’s rural traditions, has become an integral part of the Şatellites’ identity and plays a predominant role throughout the band’s music and this album.
Just as the guitar was electrified in the 1930s, the electrification of the saz in the 1960s sparked an explosion of rock music infused with Middle Eastern influences. This genre, known as Anatolian Rock, is built on the foundations of Anglo-American and psychedelic rock, yet incorporates the style, rhythms, and scales of traditional Anatolian folk music.
During the creation of the album, the band sought to intertwine different elements—funk grooves, disco rhythms, and psychedelic reverb—while staying true to Middle Eastern musical structures. Their goal is to introduce the richness of Turkish music to the Western world, allowing listeners from all backgrounds to connect with something in the album.
That said, Şatellites emphasize that their music is not purely Turkish. On the contrary, they simply strive to sound as close to the genre as possible. Their sole aim is to honor this incredible culture and present it to the world in a more accessible and relatable form.
