Drumland Dreamland
Description
Lori Vambe was born in Harare, Zimbabwe, to renowned Zimbabwean journalist and author Lawrence Vambe. After settling in London in 1959, Vambe became immersed in the early 1970s Brixton squat movement, taught himself to play drums, and formed a short-lived group, The Healing Drums of Brixton, alongside sculptor Alexander Sokolov and outsider musician Michael O’Shea. Vambe later experienced a dreamlike vision—an ecstatic sensation while playing an unknown instrument fashioned from his own umbilical cord—which would eventually manifest as the drumgita.
Drumland Dreamland is one of two personal recordings Vambe made in 1982, alongside Drumgita Solo, both released on his own label Drumony. Drumland Dreamland has been faithfully reproduced from the original artwork on single vinyl and remastered by The Carvery. The album is deep and spellbinding—a dense tapestry of layered percussion, time-warped tape loops, and spiraling drumgita patterns, all anchored by the hypnotic improvisations of Brazilian pianist Rafael Dos Santos. Both ecstatic and unsettling, this recording stands as a landmark in Black British experimental music.
