Description
The Mighty Diamonds are one of the most celebrated vocal groups on the Jamaican reggae scene. Their flawless harmonies combine with lyrics full of depth and Garveyite influence, creating an effect that will always evoke memories of that era and that place, yet, like all great music, feels timeless.
The Mighty Diamonds are composed of Donald “Tappy” Shaw (lead vocals), Fitzroy “Bunny” Simpson, and Lloyd “Judge” Ferguson, whose voices together create those fantastic harmonies. They began their recording career with producers Stranger Cole and Rupie Edwards, but their breakthrough came with producer Joseph “Joe Joe” Hookim at the legendary Channel One Studios, where they recorded “Hey Girl” and covered two foreign songs, Country Living (The Stylistics) and Stoned Out of My Mind (The Chi-Lites), both perfectly suited to their vocal style. The vocal trio also recorded tracks with other renowned producers of the time, including Joe Gibbs, Gussie Clarke, and Mr. Tappa Zukie, on which we focus here.
