Description
This latest album is both a love letter to early 1980s New York and a tribute to the late Dave Ball. Electronic music legends Soft Cell, aka singer and frontman Marc Almond and multi-instrumentalist and producer Dave Ball, are about to release "Danceteria," their sixth and final studio album. "Danceteria" is a grand, stylish, and playful farewell to 47 years of music as Soft Cell, and features iconic performances from these electronic pop icons. Evoking Sparks and the Pet Shop Boys, with lyrics worthy of Lady Gaga, the album transports you to a day in early 1980s New York, seamlessly transitioning from night to dawn for a triumphant return to the clubs. Marc offers a first glimpse of the album: "Danceteria is a love letter to early 1980s New York. The time we spent in New York—where we recorded our first three albums—left a deep impression on us, both artistically and personally." Celebrating this period is a poignant farewell to Dave Ball and Soft Cell's final studio album. "Danceteria" is also a tribute to the late Dave Ball. This final album is one of the last works Ball co-wrote and produced before his tragic and untimely passing on October 22, 2025. Almond signed the posthumous tributes, describing Dave as a "brilliant musical genius." Media outlets worldwide followed suit, hailing him as a pioneer of electronic music, and music stars such as Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe of the Pet Shop Boys, Daniel Miller of Mute Records, Cabaret Voltaire, and Richard Norris of Dave's techno duo The Grid, paid heartfelt tributes. Dave finished "Danceteria" two days before his death, and it is in his memory that the album was released as planned. It was also because of his passing that "Danceteria" had to be Soft Cell's last album, as Marc explains: "There can't be any more Soft Cell recordings without Dave, it would be impossible. The sad reality is that Dave Ball was half of Soft Cell, and apart from concerts, I can't write Soft Cell songs without him."
