Reigi, on the A-side, unfolds a cavernous syncopated kick on which relies a compressed, flangered, smart but somehow handcrafted sound with an extra Kraftwerkian treatment (the obsessive robotic “arigatō gozaimasu” and the “pocket calculator” bleeping melodic line), enlightened by discreet synth waves appearing in the middle of the track. H\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eaipa, the atmospheric B-side, is an even stronger throwback to a time when Intelligent Dance Music was ruling over electronic music, the likes of Aphex Twin and his fellow Warp-affiliates were about to be crowned kings and Ghost In The Shell was establishing itself as one of the most culturally significant pictures of the late past century.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSlowglide’s music is not backward-looking, though. There’s something that relevantly resonates with today’s diffracted musical landscape, as the French producer gathers and updates bits and pieces from a thirty-and- something yearlong history of electronic dance music. \u003cbr\u003e The result is probably “Bass Music”, something that one might have been tempted to describe as “the future of Dance Music” a few decades ago – to quote these prophetic words written many times. On Kesef, the musician whispers in a tunnel of sound effects, joined by his beloved melodica and a nonchalant electric guitar.\u003c\/p\u003e\n \n \u003cp\u003eThose who dug his previous EP might want to check out Colors and its nemesis - Dark Colors - on the flip side. Borrowing some of the ingredients he put into Sfarot, Alek Lee cooks a set of two eerie dubs. On Colors, the dark and thumping instrumental backs the voice of an impossible child, a creature bred in Tel-Aviv musician’s most twisted fantasies. Meanwhile, Dark Colors paradoxically takes a much more sentimental path. Erwan never experienced the park itself, but the memory remained, just like his\u003cbr\u003epassion for the film Metropolis, and his dream to finally meet Michel Gondry, who wielded his magic wand over the album’s cover. A hand of three aces: childhood, Fritz Lang, and Gondry, which is completed by French science fiction writer Alain Damasio – an epistolary big brother, the Philharmonie’s Orator and chief architect of utopic cities in his iconic novel `La Zone du dehors ́.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe project was an opportunity to get reacquainted with long-time stage and studio partners John Stanier, Gaspar Claus and the Vacarme band, and Bryce Dessner (guitarist for The National,) while bringing in new collaborators (and thus, new interpretation of Rone’s dreams). We find American slam-poet Saul Williams, who\u003cbr\u003ehappened to be in Paris for a moment and contributes a searing anti-Trump screed; Baxter Dury, who brings an irresistible East London touch to `Switches ́ a kind of fan fic that reimagines the Beatles’ Sargent Pepper lounging pensive in a club chair; Israeli electronic music muse Noga Erez, who inspired `Waves ́ which, despite being recorded remotely, betrays a euphoric partnership; and finally, Kazu Makino, Blonde Redhead’s bewitching singer and multi-instrumentalist, who contributes to the album’s closer, the gauzy “Down for the Cause.”\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt’s legal (and encouraged) to loiter around Mirapolis, taking in its sights and genealogy – attributes that the city displays and shares proudly. Rone remains a producer of grand instrumental pieces, which cannot be easily categorized in the architectural canon of our electronic music galaxy. Hypnotic, cinematic opening track `I Philip ́ is an offshoot from the score for the first French virtual reality fiction, built around Philip K Dick – the perfect gate into a city that then opens up a myriad of temporal perspectives.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThen comes `Lou ́ a full Technicolor projection originally presented in collaboration with Bryce Dessner during the September 2016 concert at the Funkhaus. The magic is reproduced here, through the combination of a Basque choir, the sound of daughter Alice crying wolf and John Stanier’s (of Battles) martial drumming. All of Rone is present in this fusion between the intimate, the imagination and creative labour.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e`Spank ́ is a track best enjoyed staring out into the ocean, with a knot in your stomach, while `Origami ́ represents Rone’s sensitive, romantic touch in its most essential expression – that way music can prompt us to raise the roof, while wiping away a tear of melancholy, immersing us in the same progressive sensuality as the now-cult Rone tracks `Bye Bye Macadam ́, `So So So ́ and `Parade ́ among other hymns that reassure us that thinking and dancing can be one and the same. `Brest ́ deploys a noisy lyricism that once again harkens back to the Philharmonie concert, while interlude `Zapoï ́ is an outgrowth from the production of `Everything ́. The title track `Mirapolis ́ sings the gospel of the Fun Fair’s luminous psychedelia, reminding listeners of their where they came from and why it’s perfectly reasonable to dance.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAnd thus we snorkel through Mirapolis’ musical depths. A city that generates constant wonderment, a desire for emancipation, a gathering of citizens connected to the collective’s vital energy.
