The musician takes on his internal meanders, with just his trusty computer, and the blessedness of surrendering to a type of ennui, a languorous state that he knew to bear fruit, as first album `Spanish Breakfast ́ (which was produced in part in a tiny attic studio perched above the roofs of Paris) bore witness.

As the tracks took shape, it was back to his Montreuil studio – his cathedral of sound and pleasure, built as a temple of collaboration with peers, and to the expression of his machines. Live performances come in tow, with the nourishment of the audience, backstage experimentation, and two major events: the collaborative project between 80 artists, led by the Dessner brothers, Bon Iver and Vincent Moon over the course of 48 hours at Berlin’s Funkhaus, and the perfect communion between himself, his friends, and a 4000-strong audience at the Philharmonie de Paris in January 2017.

Remaining oneself, yet seeking constant reinvention: `Mirapolis ́ the codename for the project, was the germ for the subsequent unshackling of the imagination. That of little Erwan, coming across the Mirapolis amusement park from the car’s back seat on the way to family vacation, becoming entranced by the welcoming grin of a giant at the gate. Erwan never experienced the park itself, but the memory remained, just like his
passion for the film Metropolis, and his dream to finally meet Michel Gondry, who wielded his magic wand over the album’s cover. A hand of three aces: childhood, Fritz Lang, and Gondry, which is completed by French science fiction writer Alain Damasio – an epistolary big brother, the Philharmonie’s Orator and chief architect of utopic cities in his iconic novel `La Zone du dehors ́.

The project was an opportunity to get reacquainted with long-time stage and studio partners John Stanier, Gaspar Claus and the Vacarme band, and Bryce Dessner (guitarist for The National,) while bringing in new collaborators (and thus, new interpretation of Rone’s dreams). We find American slam-poet Saul Williams, who
happened to be in Paris for a moment and contributes a searing anti-Trump screed; Baxter Dury, who brings an irresistible East London touch to `Switches ́ a kind of fan fic that reimagines the Beatles’ Sargent Pepper lounging pensive in a club chair; Israeli electronic music muse Noga Erez, who inspired `Waves ́ which, despite being recorded remotely, betrays a euphoric partnership; and finally, Kazu Makino, Blonde Redhead’s bewitching singer and multi-instrumentalist, who contributes to the album’s closer, the gauzy “Down for the Cause.”

It’s legal (and encouraged) to loiter around Mirapolis, taking in its sights and genealogy – attributes that the city displays and shares proudly. Rone remains a producer of grand instrumental pieces, which cannot be easily categorized in the architectural canon of our electronic music galaxy. Hypnotic, cinematic opening track `I Philip ́ is an offshoot from the score for the first French virtual reality fiction, built around Philip K Dick – the perfect gate into a city that then opens up a myriad of temporal perspectives.

Then comes `Lou ́ a full Technicolor projection originally presented in collaboration with Bryce Dessner during the September 2016 concert at the Funkhaus. The magic is reproduced here, through the combination of a Basque choir, the sound of daughter Alice crying wolf and John Stanier’s (of Battles) martial drumming. All of Rone is present in this fusion between the intimate, the imagination and creative labour.

`Spank ́ is a track best enjoyed staring out into the ocean, with a knot in your stomach, while `Origami ́ represents Rone’s sensitive, romantic touch in its most essential expression – that way music can prompt us to raise the roof, while wiping away a tear of melancholy, immersing us in the same progressive sensuality as the now-cult Rone tracks `Bye Bye Macadam ́, `So So So ́ and `Parade ́ among other hymns that reassure us that thinking and dancing can be one and the same. `Brest ́ deploys a noisy lyricism that once again harkens back to the Philharmonie concert, while interlude `Zapoï ́ is an outgrowth from the production of `Everything ́. The title track `Mirapolis ́ sings the gospel of the Fun Fair’s luminous psychedelia, reminding listeners of their where they came from and why it’s perfectly reasonable to dance.

And thus we snorkel through Mirapolis’ musical depths. A city that generates constant wonderment, a desire for emancipation, a gathering of citizens connected to the collective’s vital energy. After spending half a day in a studio, a series of 3/4 tracks developed naturally in a composition of new music of 35 minutes that will be released at the end of September. The 7 pieces of "Indoors" assert its difference far from the canons of the current piano stylistic clichés, in fact, the sensitivity is not feigned, the compositions oscillate with ease in stylistic registers varied enough to draw an extraordinary personality, with glimpses of jazz and unique groove. In his music, there are traces of Bugge Wesseltoft, Henrik Schwarz, Francesco Tristano, Vanessa Wagner, Murcof and Brandt Brauer Frick. But they are just traces, tiny sparkles because, in the end, his compositions are based purely through his eyes' perception of the world that he lives and that he narrates about through his notes.

"Indoors", despite the title, is an album to listen outdoors because it embraces all our visceral feelings that life pushes us towards to. In every track, different layers of melodies embark us on journeys that define the rhythm of a day of each one of us. From sunrise to sunset, every second, every moment, every fraction in Mischa Blanos'
music finds an answer or a beat that can describe it. Exploring our scattered and frenetic era is a tough task, but yet, even though his young age, Mischa finds himself comfortable in directing us in this hectic composition that is life. "Chatting In 21st Century", based on Bach, questions our ability to connect without words but with images and icons. "Am Wired" tries to pierce the bubble of glass behind our phones and their cameras, in which we hide in a vertiginous abyss. "Habits" is a melancholic ballad of all the regrets and the "what if" that we left behind us.

But as in 24 hours, there is light and there is darkness, "Indoors", in the same way, also reminds us of our humanity and its tender beautiful fragility as in the after-love of "Two Sugar Cubes" or in the melodic piano "Forebondings", both tracks that leave us with a sense of peaceful restored faith and desire to experience life. Throughout his career, the French director has been able to surprise his audience by playing on the codes of "genre films", while remaining faithful to the aesthetics of "art film". His cinema is both profound and entertaining, sophisticated and accessible, dark and dreamlike.

“Jacques’ cinema is physical, sensual, modern”, Rone says about the director, ”when he asked me to do the music for Paris, 13th District , I immediately accepted, without seeing any images or reading the script. He is simply one of the greatest contemporary filmmakers.”

His new feature film deals with youth in general and their sexuality in particular in a way no one may have done before. The story is based on four young characters and their existential questionings, whose destinies intertwined against the backdrop of the Parisian “Olympiades” high rises in the 13th arrondissement.

But time was already running out, as the film was set to be nominated for Cannes’ Palm D’or at the rescheduled edition of the festival in July 2021. Between the releases of "Rone & Friends" and his remixes for Agnes Obel, Go Go Penguin and Jehnny Beth (who also plays a role in the film), the producer decided to lock himself away in in his brand new Isola Studio in Cancale, French Brittany. He also invested in a large screen on which he projected loops of the film and started manipulating his gear. "I had Miles Davis in mind and the way he composed "Ascenseur pour l'échafaud” by improvising with his band while watching excerpts from the film.”

After a first conclusive test on three scenes of the film which allowed Rone to showcase the skills he had developed in composition in various musical fields, a relationship of trust developed between the musician and the director, which resulted in over 45 minutes of Rone’s music used for the final cut. “There was a lot of music to be made in a short time, but the talks with Jacques were very stimulating. He had a fairly precise idea of what he wanted, while at the same time, I think, having the desire to be surprised, or even a little shaken up.”

If the black and white aesthetic recalls the great hours of the "Nouvelle Vague", Rone ́s music gives a new layer to the film which fits resolutely with 2020’s zeitgeist. The sequencing of the album follows the exact narrative of the movie.

“Opening” reveals in 3 minutes the width of the emotional spectrum deployed all over the film ranging from the most soothed waves of the introduction to the powerful outburst of raw analogue notes in the conclusion. The hypnotic mood of club music is echoed on “MDMA” and “Emilie Dance”, both of which emphasize the body dynamics of the film. Alternatively, miniature pieces of ambient music are woven into the film like tapestries of cerebral sounds. "One Month Later", on the other hand, makes no compromises. The track openly bears Rone's sonic backbone known from his albums.

The work on the long travelling scene at the end of the film on “Nora & Amber”, inspired by the theme of the opening piece, abandons the drum machines to breathe in an immersive and almost orchestral depth that left audiences speechless.

This second soundtrack by Rone is a sonic urban adventure in itself. As it is used in the film, colouring in the lives of Audiard’s protagonists, it will have the same impact on us, the listeners, in our own everyday lives.

Ones enters Inland as if exploring an inner landscape, roaming freely through a gently throbbing natural world, in which each note is a step and every sound forms a path. After all, when Cage wrote his manifesto The Future of Music in the late 1930s, he already knew that the merging of written and electronic music would bear exquisite fruits.

The album is the lone protuberance from 2016 album Statea, on which Wagner, alongside producer Murcof (she on the piano, him manning the machines), reinterpreted pieces from the fathers of minimalism: Arvo Pärt, Philip Glass, Morton Feldman, Erik Satie, or John Cage.

The same secret conversation between the artist, the piano, and contemporary music is now continuing on Inland. Making more with less, the album turns long harmonies into multicolored prisms, miniature detailed embroidery, sighs and breaths, syncopated or restrained chants. In this brave new world, sounds exist for themselves, and silence comes to life. While the repertoire remains in the minimalistic vein, it gives priority to living composers, of which almost all are still active.

The repertoire’s cartography has been extended: its (male or female) composers can be American, of course, but also French, Belgian, German or Latvian.
The choice of works and their sequencing was dreamed up as a sort of storytelling.

Ambient Music must be able to accommodate many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in particular; it must be as ignorable as it is interesting."

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0004/4099/1797/files/B_Brubaker_Eno_Piano_IF1088_Digital_Cover_34cfec10-5e63-432b-92a3-2d051cbb6405.jpg?v=1696338396
d-argent-et-de-sang-original-series-soundtrack
D’Argent Et De Sang (Original Series Soundtrack)

A mesmerizing journey of electronic and classical elements for this year most awaited Canal + series

"D'Argent & De Sang" is the latest creation from French producer Erwan Castex, known as Rone, famous for acclaimed albums such as "Room with a View" and "Tohu Bohu", who won a César for his first soundtrack for Frédéric Farrucci's film "La Nuit Venue" in 2021 and the award for best soundtrack at the Cannes Film Festival for Jacques Audiard's "Les Olympiades".

Initially entitled "Tikkoun", the next CANAL+ original series "D'Argent & De Sang" is produced by Curiosa Films and directed by multi-César winner Xavier Giannoli (with “Lost Ilusions in 2021), with whom the composer worked closely to develop a subtle blend of electronic and classical sounds, a field in which Rone's reputation is well established. "By mixing classical orchestral textures with modern electronic elements, I wanted to symbolise the heterogeneity of the worlds that intersect in this story".

The first part of the series, which features among many others Vincent Lindon will be broadcast in France on Canal + from 16 October 2023.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0004/4099/1797/files/Rone_Argent_Sang_IF_1090_Digital_Cover_2_5f0cf273-eac0-4499-b560-029631ca92d6.jpg?v=1697452061
when-all-you-want-to-do-is-be-the-fire-part-of-fire
When all you want to do is be the fire part of fire

When all you want to do is be the fire part of fire… say it to yourself and then say it again.
